A large-format print store with PDF artwork in the online designer

Netbase, through its CMSmart division, rebuilt the website of a large-format inkjet printing company in Singapore. The project started from a ready-made WordPress print store package and turned it into a site with its own interface, workflow and custom functions, including PDF artwork that shoppers can edit inside the online designer. The client's name is withheld.

The problem

The printer found CMSmart while looking for a print store solution and liked the online product designer in the WordPress Printstore package. A packaged theme, though, is available to any print business. A large, established printer needs a site that carries its own brand and matches how its production works, so it asked Netbase to redevelop the user experience, the interface and most of the system around the package's features.

Large-format work adds a file problem. Print quality depends on the artwork, and JPG or PNG files at that size are heavy to store when many orders arrive each day. PDF keeps quality in a smaller file, but the designer at the time accepted a PDF only as a fixed background that shoppers could not edit.

What Netbase built

  • A redeveloped print store

New UX and UI and most of the system rebuilt on the Printstore feature set, following the client's detailed workflow, design files and specifications for each back-end and front-end function.

  • PDF artwork in the designer

An uploaded PDF is converted page by page into high-resolution PNG images that work like any other image on the design canvas.

  • Resolution warning

A pop-up tells the shopper when an uploaded file is low resolution, before it becomes a print problem.

  • Multi-page mapping

The pages of a multi-page PDF fill the sides of a product in order; if the file has more pages than the product has sides, each page is still offered as a separate image to pick in the editor.

  • Custom functions

Additional back-end and front-end functions from the client's specification, added in phases.

How the work was delivered

The printer's team supplied the workflow, the design and a document describing how each function should behave. That level of preparation let Netbase plan the rebuild in phases rather than as one release. The PDF upload took several attempts: a PDF mixes text, vector and image elements that a canvas editor cannot read directly, and the conversion approach was chosen after other methods failed in testing.

What is not claimed

The public story was written while the cooperation was still running, so this record states scope only: no launch date, traffic, sales or production figure. No AI feature is part of this project.

Other print businesses asked for designer features too: an online printer that added photo editing tools and a design tool provider that added a preview bar. All of them are summarised in our web-to-print customer stories.
