Why companies choose Vietnam for software delivery
Buyers usually arrive with a capacity problem, not a geography preference: a roadmap that the in-house team cannot deliver, a hiring market that is too slow or too expensive, or a product that needs skills the company does not want to hire permanently. Vietnam enters the shortlist for three practical reasons.
- A working day that suits several markets. Vietnam runs on UTC+7 all year, with no daylight saving change. Its afternoon meets the European morning, most of its day overlaps East Asia and Australia, and handoffs with the Americas can run overnight.
- An established legal base for software IP. Vietnam's Law on Intellectual Property (Law No. 50/2005/QH11) covers copyright, patents, designs and trademarks. The country has been a member of the Berne Convention since 2004 and of the WTO TRIPS Agreement since January 2007, according to WIPO's country profile. That does not replace a good contract, but it means the contract sits on familiar foundations.
- An emerging-market cost base. Engineering costs generally sit below those of the main Western hubs. The saving is real only when it buys senior reviewers and QA, not a larger unsupervised team.
- A mature services industry in the web, commerce and SaaS stacks. Vietnamese companies have delivered for overseas clients for years, which shows in process: written specifications, sprint reviews, English documentation and tooling that clients already use.
We deliberately give no market statistics here. Salary surveys and "top destination" rankings date quickly and rarely compare like with like. Ask each vendor for their own evidence instead: delivered projects, client references and how long their teams stay together.

Team models and commercial terms
There are four common ways to engage a software partner, and each suits a different stage of certainty. Most Netbase projects, though, are not bought as outsourced capacity: Netbase leads with consulting, solutions and custom development, and delivers most projects on fixed-price contracts after discovery, with team models as a secondary option.

Commercial terms follow the model: a fixed price for a defined project, the arrangement most Netbase projects use; milestone-based payments for staged work; a monthly team retainer for dedicated teams; or KPI-linked terms where outcomes can be measured. Team shape. A delivery team at Netbase ranges from 3 to 30 people and combines business analysts, project managers, solution architects, developers, QA engineers and UI/UX designers. Work typically starts within one to two weeks after discovery. A small team with a solution architect and QA from the start usually outperforms a larger team of developers alone.
AI-augmented delivery: what to expect from an outsourced team
AI has changed what a good offshore team looks like. Engineers now use AI assistants to draft code, tests and documentation, and buyers increasingly want AI features in the product itself. Neither is a reason to skip governance; both need terms agreed before the first sprint.
In how the team works. Expect AI help with code review, unit and regression test drafts, documentation that keeps pace with the code, and grouping of logs and bug reports. Each is a draft: an engineer reviews every suggestion, and the person who merges a change answers for it. Judge the team by accepted releases and defect trends, not by headcount or hours.
In what the team builds. Assistants over your documents, AI search, document capture and recommendations are now ordinary scope items. Ask for delivered examples. Security by design, not at the end. Security checks belong in the pipeline from the first sprint: code review, dependency and vulnerability scanning, secrets kept out of repositories, and access granted by role. An offshore team that adds security only before launch hands you the rework.
Time-zone overlap and communication
Distance is rarely the problem in remote-first delivery; unmanaged time zones are. Decide in advance which hours both sides are online and what happens outside them.

Three habits make the difference whatever the overlap:
- One named owner on each side. Questions go to a person, not a channel.
- Written handoffs. Every day ends with what was done, what is blocked and what is needed from the client.
- A fixed review rhythm. Weekly reviews against a KPI dashboard catch drift before it becomes a missed release.

Practical protections that matter more than any clause:
- Keep the repository in your own account from the first commit, with the vendor invited as contributors.
- Own the cloud accounts and domains, and grant the vendor role-based access.
- Sign NDAs with the company, and confirm that every contributor works under one.
- Agree a data processing agreement when the team will touch personal data. If you are in the EU or EEA and personal data will be processed outside it, the European Commission's standard contractual clauses are the usual transfer mechanism.
- Plan the exit on day one: documentation, handover sessions and credential rotation.
