How to read these stories
The stories come from CMSmart's public community pages, written between 2019 and 2023, and from Netbase's own project records. Each one describes what a customer needed and what Netbase built. We follow three rules:
- Scope, not invented results. Most stories were written while stores were still being built, so we publish what was delivered and no traffic or sales figure. Measured results appear only on the named case studies that published them.
- Names only where the client is referenceable. 4over4, USticker, Rebelo AG, PrintLeo, Indieprint and Geo-Tek IT Solutions are named. Every other business is described by its type and region, and no individual is named.
- AI only where it was delivered. None of the stories below records an AI technique, so none is presented as delivered AI. The last section explains where AI fits now.
Stories by use case
| Use case | What the business needed | What Netbase built |
|---|---|---|
| Product labels | Ready labels, templates and own designs in one custom site | A site from the client's designs with shape-first label design and file upload |
| Invitations and cards | Print files that match orders without checking the dashboard | Product keys and quantities in PDF names, one PDF per multi-page card |
| Wallpaper, print on demand | Confidence before a large order | A Buy a Sample flow with a sample price per product |
| Large format and signage | A unique store and editable PDF artwork | A rebuilt store with PDF-to-image upload and resolution warnings |
| Print shops | A packaged store that fits the brand and shows prices clearly | Branded product pages, a pricing table, bleed-free rulers and rotation |
| Photo tools and design experience | Fewer reasons to leave the designer | Background removal, 30+ filter styles, a preview bar, 3D preview and Illustrator import |
| Multi-vendor stores | Several sellers under one storefront | A WordPress multi-store theme with a multi-vendor plugin |
Labels and stickers
A product label printer wanted a site that looked and worked exactly as planned, so Netbase built a custom label printing website from the client's own page designs. Shoppers can buy ready labels, open a template in the designer, start a label from its shape, size and material, or upload finished artwork.
Sticker printing shows the same pattern at the design stage. USticker, an online sticker printer, added a background tab to its designer: shoppers upload their own image, pick a solid colour or choose from an image library the store fills.
Invitations and cards
A German printer of birthday and wedding invitations used the NBDesigner product designer for WooCommerce, then found that its print files did not say which product or quantity they belonged to. Netbase tailored the designer to its order flow: a product key and the ordered quantity go into each PDF file name, all pages of a card export as one PDF even at different page sizes, and the cart page no longer invites last-minute edits.
Wallpaper and print on demand
Wallpaper is bought in quantity, and colour and material are hard to judge on a screen. A wallpaper printing business with a Dutch-language store asked for a way around that, and Netbase built a Buy a Sample flow in about ten days: shoppers pick a design and its variations and order a sample at a price the admin sets for each product.
Large format and signage
A Singapore large-format inkjet printer started from a packaged print store and asked Netbase to redevelop the interface and most of the system around its own workflow, in phases over more than a year. The hardest part was artwork: uploaded PDFs are now converted into high-resolution images that shoppers can edit on the design canvas, with a warning for low-resolution files and page-by-page mapping to product sides.
Print shops choosing a packaged store
Several print shops began with a ready-made WordPress print store and asked for changes where the package met their brand or their pricing. A full-service print shop got branded product pages, a pricing table and editor upgrades: designer set-up for its product list, large variation thumbnails, rulers that measure the finished size without bleed, and an optional rotate tool per product.
Interviews with CMSmart customers in 2019 show who chooses this route. PrintLeo, an ecommerce and advertising company, runs the WordPress Printshop package for its online design plugin. Geo-Tek IT Solutions in Cyprus bought the online design tool and lets customers either upload artwork or upload and design. Indieprint, a Melbourne paper and apparel printer, chose the WooCommerce online designer for its interface and print-ready files. Buyers who are not named include a printing and advertising firm in Kuala Lumpur that uses the price matrix, two German agencies, a Portuguese web designer and a print company in Israel whose developer asked for Hebrew right-to-left support. For apparel, a Turkish yearbook printer and an Indian developer chose the TEEPRO T-shirt theme with the online designer.
Photo tools and design experience
The richest requests were about keeping shoppers inside the designer:
- Photo tools. An online printer in the Seychelles added a remove-background tool and more than 30 cartoon filter styles, so photos are prepared where they are printed.
- Multi-page preview. An online design tool provider in Thailand got a design preview bar to create, jump between, print and download several designs on one page, built in about a week.
- 3D preview. Rebelo AG in Portugal sells boxes and other multi-sided products, so shoppers now check a 3D preview of the finished item before ordering.
- Illustrator import. 4over4 converts uploaded Adobe Illustrator (.ai) files to SVG, so layers can be ungrouped and recoloured and .ai files become editable templates.
Multi-vendor print and product marketplaces
Some customers wanted several sellers under one store rather than a single print shop. A Mumbai entertainment company's web developer and a Canadian marketplace founder chose the CMSmart WordPress Multi Store theme with its multi-vendor plugin. These were product purchases with support, not custom marketplace builds. When a marketplace needs its own vendor onboarding, commission and payout rules, the ecommerce marketplace solution and the marketplace platform architecture guide cover the build.
Patterns across the stories
- Start packaged, customise where orders break. Most customers kept the standard store or designer and changed only the steps that caused manual work or lost sales.
- Artwork handling decides print quality. PDF conversion, resolution warnings, bleed-free rulers and Illustrator import all move file checks earlier, before a job reaches the press.
- Let shoppers see the result. Previews, 3D views and samples answer the question buyers ask before a personalised order: what will I actually get?
- Make order data readable for staff. Product keys in file names and one file per design save the checking that happens between checkout and production.
- Small features, fast delivery. Several requests took one to four weeks, while a full store rebuild ran in phases over a year.
Where AI fits
None of these stories records an AI feature, and the Illustrator import is a file format conversion: the ".ai" extension is Adobe Illustrator, not artificial intelligence. The photo tools come closest. Background removal and turning a photo into an illustration are tasks where computer-vision models now do much of the work, so a similar project today would evaluate that approach and test the output at full print size. The same applies to automated pre-flight checks that flag low resolution, missing bleed or unsafe text before an order is paid. We treat these as AI-assisted steps under human review, because a print error costs material and a reprint.

Frequently asked questions
Most businesses in these stories started with a packaged store or designer and customised the steps their orders depended on. A fully custom site made sense for the label printer and the large-format printer, which had exact designs and workflows of their own.
Yes. The large-format printer's designer converts uploaded PDFs into editable high-resolution images, and 4over4's converts Illustrator files to SVG and imports them as templates.
The stories do not say which technique the remove-background tool and cartoon filters use, so we do not call them AI. A similar project today would consider computer-vision models and test the results at print size.
