Photo editing tools inside an online printer's product designer

Netbase, through its CMSmart division, added two photo tools to the online designer of a print service in the Seychelles: a remove-background tool and a cartoon filter collection with more than 30 styles. Shoppers can now prepare their photos where they design and order, instead of editing them in another app first. The client's name is withheld.

The problem

The client already used the NBDesigner online designer and wanted it to serve professional designers as well as casual shoppers. Its research pointed to two gaps. Many customers wanted to cut a person, pet or product out of a photo to make stickers, memes or a new background. Others wanted playful illustrated versions of their photos, which they were making in separate apps and then uploading. Both steps happened outside the store, which made ordering slower and gave shoppers a reason to leave.

What Netbase built

  • Remove background

Shoppers upload a photo and remove its background inside the designer, then place the cut-out subject on a product, a new background or a sticker shape.

  • Cartoon filter collection

More than 30 styles, from pencil and watercolour effects to 2D and 3D animation looks, turn an uploaded photo into an illustration in about five seconds.

  • One place to design

Both tools sit in the designer next to templates, text and clipart, so the edited image goes straight into the print design and the order.

How the work was delivered

The two teams met to agree the look of the filters: a three-day workshop settled the style direction, with a vintage, painterly character for the collection. Netbase then built the tools into the existing designer, so the client's catalogue, templates and checkout stayed as they were.

What is not claimed, and where AI fits

The public stories do not record which technique powers the two tools, so this record does not describe them as AI. Background removal and photo restyling are tasks where computer-vision models now do much of the work; a similar project today would start by choosing that approach and checking print quality at full size. The record publishes no traffic, conversion or sales figure.
