Client and operating context
Netztech sells a broad range of technical products online. The store has hundreds of thousands of registered customers, daily traffic and, on busy days, several hundred orders. Magento 1 had reached end of life, so the company decided to move to Magento 2 Commerce for current security features and vendor support.
Challenge and baseline
- The storefront design looked dated.
- Website performance and user experience were poor, and pages loaded slowly.
- The admin panel was too technical for day-to-day use.

Netztech chose Magento 2 Commerce rather than Open Source for the support, account management and server options that let it outsource responsibilities.

Magento 1 and Magento 2 use different data tables, so records had to be transformed, not copied.

More than ten Magento 1 extensions needed Magento 2 equivalents, configuration and conflict resolution.
Netbase's role and approach
After the contract was signed, Netbase JSC gave Netztech a detailed schedule with tasks, deadlines and milestones. All work ran on a development server that the owner could access to review progress. Netztech followed tasks in Netbase's project-management tool, including a Gantt view and support tickets, and the teams stayed in touch through Skype, WhatsApp, Slack and email.
Implementation and deliverables
- New design implementation and configuration, reviewed with Netztech against the Magento 2 structure.
- Data migration of orders, shipments, invoices, CMS pages, customers, categories and products, run twice: at the start and just before go-live.
- Extension migration: installation, configuration, customization and data transfer for 11 modules.
- Custom functions: search and quantity verification.
- Site configuration: email templates, CMS pages, language, currency, shipping and payment.
- Deployment to the live environment.
Results
- Migration completed in 35 working days.
- Every entity Netztech asked for was transferred; migration issues were fixed quickly.
- The new storefront met the design goals, with faster pages and a better user experience (not quantified in the case study).
- The Magento 2 admin is easier for Netztech's team to use than the Magento 1 admin.
- Netbase provided three months of free support after launch, and Netztech ordered further customizations.
Method and limitations: outcomes are qualitative and were published by Netbase with Netztech's blessing in 2021. No performance measurements were published.

Lessons
Treat a Magento 1 to Magento 2 move as a rebuild with a data-transformation project inside it. Running the data migration twice, once early and once just before go-live, keeps the new store current without freezing the old one for weeks.
